Sustainable diets are those diets which cause low environmental impacts which contribute to food and nutrition security and to healthy life for present and future generations. Sustainable diets are protective and respectful of bio diversity and ecosystems, culturally acceptable, accessible, economically fair and affordable; nutritionally adequate, safe and healthy while optimising natural and human resources (FAO-Food and Agricultural Organisation, Rome, Italy)

Our Hildur Oats is sustainably sourced from Nordic countries of Europe. Based on GDP per capita, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden are among the most prosperous countries of Europe with some of the highest standards of living in the world. Their mixed economy has a heavy emphasis on foreign trade and it is best known for its emphasis on sustainable food production and export of knowledge-intensive products.

The soil, water and cultivation methods are of a high standard in terms of purity in the Nordic countries. The low use of plant protection products has led to record low residues in the grains. Also the residues of unwanted substances such as mycotoxins and acrylamide are well controlled and in general low. Thanks to the information, regulatory requirements and not the least the voluntary performance, low levels of cadmium and other heavy metals in the soil has been possible.

Oat has naturally high disease tolerance and a relatively low requirement of nutrients and is an excellent rotation crop contributing to reduced soil erosion and plant diseases.

A life cycle analysis (LCA)

A life cycle analysis (LCA) shows that the total emission of greenhouse gases equivalent to Carbon dioxide ( CO2e) due to oats production is 0,60 Kg CO2e/ Kg oats in Sweden and in Finland it is 1.15 Kg CO2e/ Kg oats.
